A look at the frontier of rehabilitation at the 16th international society of physical medicine and rehabilitation 2022 world congress

Unlike the year 2021, marked by the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic, which limited the displacement of participants, the world congress took place in a fully online model, integrating the viability of the event, and the relevance of the initiatives of each speaker in their various performances and especially in the interferences of rehabilitation in patients diagnosed with COVID-19. The year 2022 was marked by the great reunion of members of the International Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ISPRM), medical residents of the specialty, and the various professionals interested in this topic.
The grandeur of the world event from 3 to 7 July 2022, held in Lisbon, Portugal, was marked by the intensive involvement of members of society in an unprecedented format of unifying three major events in a single moment, the 16th ISPRM World Congress, the 23rd ESPRM European Congress, and the 22nd Portuguese Congress. This initiative contributed to motivate not only at the regional level but also impacted the relevance of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (MFR) on a planet that has been suffering from the various sequelae of COVID-19, the importance of different forms of rehabilitation and treatments of the countless pathologies such as motor disability, vascular accidents, spasticity, myofascial syndrome, and chronic pain.
Although the costs, dependent on foreign currency, were high, every penny invested returned in learning and great professional experience, since in the middle of the European summer, there were more than 3000 health professionals from all continents, focused on both education and training, and inspiring the evolution of the global MFR. It was an aggregator from the beginning with the warm welcome at the opening ceremony by the celebrated Mr. Tedros Adhanom, Director of the WHO and the President of Portugal, Mr. Marcelo Nuno de Souza.
Brilliantly honored for his crucial performance in the face of an episode of War that began in February 2022, Dr. Volodymyr Golyk, Minister of Health, Head of the Department of Rehabilitation, Co-founder of the Ukrainian Society of MFR was remembered for the protagonism of rehabilitation within a humanitarian crisis.
The event featured a rich discussion with more than 34 workshops and more than 50 immersive lectures on various areas of rehabilitation from neuromodulation, ultrasound techniques to cardiovascular rehabilitation in intensive care. With more than 1200 scientific articles thematically displayed on the following subjects: musculoskeletal and nervous system disorders, people with COVID-19, spasticity, health interventions, amputations, cancer, orthopedic diseases, new technologies and robotics, aging people, spinal disorders, and pediatric diseases. A total of 200 articles were selected for a session dedicated to short oral presentations in the exhibition hall, integrating the participants of the events, and promoting academic, scientific, and unforgettable networking.
There was a strengthening of participation in the youth forum, the creation of working groups, committees, and special interest groups, such as the PAIN SIG, acting as a facilitator and disseminator of knowledge and skills exchange among MFR aspirants, experts, and researchers in the context of chronic pain.
The closing was a huge show of strength and engagement from the vanguards of world physiatry such as Dr. John Melvin and Dr. Linamara Battistela for the youth who will follow this frontier of care in rehabilitation. They brought the various experiences of what has already been done and what we should have done as a society, reviving the construction of the foundations of the ISPRM, which since 1999 has been acting as a nongovernmental organization that aims to continuously improve the practice of MFR and facilitate our access international health organizations with the aim of contributing to better functioning and quality of life for people with disabilities.
The event was also an opportunity to reinforce expectations of how connected the modern world is on digital platforms that bring patients closer to physiatrists who believe in multi-professional care models, expanding the relationship of trust between doctors and patients, and developing humanized and supported care on scientific evidence.
