The International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM) has a humanitarian or civil societal, a professional, and a scientific mandate.[1] Thus, like every other scientific society, the ISPRM must have an official journal. In 2006, The Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine (JRM) was adopted as the official journal of ISPRM. However, in May 2008, during a bus trip to the first President's Cabinet (PC) retreat, in Huangshan, China, the incoming ISPRM President, Gerold Stucki, and I had a long discussion about the ISPRM's need to own (instead of adopting) an official journal. Among several reasons, we believe that an official journal owned by the ISPRM is paramount not only to publish outstanding science and research in physical and rehabilitation medicine (PRM) but also to disseminate ISPRM policies and mission.[2] A journal for ISPRM is an opportunity to create its own agenda and to share our mission, vision, and values with all the physicians and scientists who belong to our Society and many other colleagues in rehabilitation.
The JRM, until now the only official journal of ISPRM, is a top-level journal of our specialty, with an outstanding scientific and editorial level, which is owned by the Swedish Foundation for Rehabilitation Information (FRI), an independent nonprofit foundation.[2],[3] Currently, the FRI Board is composed of five members, three Swedish and two from the North Europe (UK and Denmark). However, the ISPRM does not have any formal representative, nominated by the ISPRM Board, on that Board of Directors.[3] The ISPRM felt that it was very important to have an official journal that did not belong to a specific region of the World and the Assembly of Delegates gave the PC a mandate to find a solution. The ISPRM respects and understands the FRI's decision to maintain their administrative structure and decided to move forward founding its own Journal, which we have named The Journal of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (JISPRM).
The creation of JISPRM is based on the need for an association-owned, high-quality, peer-reviewed journal that will document the significant research and clinical findings of all health-care practitioners interested in PRM, particularly in the tradition of interdisciplinary and multiprofessional teams. The JISPRM is launched with the deep and genuine willingness to help in the dissemination of the best quality science and the philosophy and roles of PRM. We firmly believe that a dedicated peer-reviewed journal will play a major role in the growth of our specialty. The mission of the JISPRM is “to publish information regarding the science and practice of PRM for the benefit of PRM practitioners around the world and their research and clinical collaborators. Through the dissemination of this information, the journal seeks to enhance the care and well-being of persons with disabilities and advance the field of rehabilitation.”[4]
ISPRM must have an inclusive leadership style and wishes to continue developing the Web of PRM journals.[2],[5],[6] Therefore, the objectives of the JISPRM include to collaborate with other journals and publications to collectively advance the common mission of promoting PRM. The ISPRM will continue promoting and collaborating with the journals published in association with or endorsed by ISPRM.[7]
The Significance of the New Journal to the Present and Future of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine | | |
How can we help translate science to improve Human Health?
Research that is not read does not exist.
The field of rehabilitation medicine is rapidly evolving and is accompanied by exciting developments in PRM science, from basic to clinical science and research, from cell to society.[8] Journals have a unique and crucial role in the dissemination of research and knowledge. It is essential to publish and discuss the results of scientific studies in order to promote an endless approximation to the “truth” in the scientific community and to stimulate the generation of new research questions. However, scientific journals must also represent a community of sharing and discussion of mutual aims and philosophy. There are numerous journals of relevance in the field of PRM and the JISPRM is being created in a highly competitive world of publishing. Even though the number of scientific journals is increasing, this decision to create a new journal is warranted, because it will also serve to spread information that is not published elsewhere. The JISPRM will also help with the development of standards. JISPRM will be instrumental in the development of scientific fields in PRM, contributing to the ISPRM mission and goals.[9],[10]
The editorial board has an outstanding scientific quality.
The Editor-in-Chief, Gerard Francisco, and the Editorial Board will use their knowledge, expertise, and enthusiasm to continuously produce an outstanding journal, with high visibility and impact.[11] The JISPRM is a key project for the ISPRM PC, and we are and will continue to be supportive of its publication. Attracting a sufficient number of high-quality publications to produce a satisfactory number of issues every year is going to be a hard task.[12] However, we have the support and engagement of the colleagues who accepted the challenge of joining the JISPRM Editorial Board, and we also hope to have your support! We look forward to receiving your manuscripts and your advice about how to improve the JISPRM.
The JISPRM is an online, open-access Journal. ISPRM is willing to distribute good science for free.
As many of you know, open access (OA) is a relatively recent development in scientific publishing. OA is intended to promote unrestricted online access to manuscripts.[13] After 2000, with the launch of the Budapest OA initiative, OA saw an exponential growth.[13],[14]
Some OA journals adopted an author-pays model, charging the authors with manuscripts processing charges, which changed the core of the publishing business that was initially focused on readers.[15] Relying on manuscripts' submissions to obtain financial profit often leads to a lack of a rigorous peer-review process and not following international norms concerning ethics and quality standards.[16] To avoid these circumstances, we have decided to make the JISPRM an OA journal at no cost to readers and investigators who submit their work, and we have our highest commitment to follow the standards of ethical behavior and the COPE principles of transparency.[17]
The JISPRM needs your active collaboration.
I would like to encourage all of you to submit the results of your work for publication in the JISPRM! We are looking forward to receiving interesting manuscripts from you. I sincerely believe that JISPRM will play an important role in the evolution of ISPRM and will provide PRM specialists the chance to contribute to the future of The Journal.
I strongly encourage ISPRM members, clinicians, researchers, and academicians to actively contribute to our official journal by submitting original manuscripts and review papers.
I offer you my best wishes.
Let this be the beginning of a great JISPRM.
